Tribratanews.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) provided medical treatment for the victims of the 5.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Papua on Thursday (9/2/23).

Most of the victims suffered injuries from building debris.

“The police have immediately evacuated the earthquake victims in Papua. Most of them, who were wounded from the rubble, were taken by ambulance of the Police Medical and Health Department for immediate medical treatment,” said the Head of the Public Relations Division of the INP, Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo, in his official statement on Thursday (9/2/23).

Based on data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the earthquake claimed four lives.  Their bodies were found in the ruins of the cafeteria building, which had collapsed due to earthquake shocks.

The Chief Executive of the BPBD Jayapura, Asep Khalid, said that the cafeteria was located above the waters of the Jayapura City area. Therefore, the evacuation process required the help from a team of diving experts.
