Chief of South Sumatra Regional Police Claimed Curfew Restriction Effectively Reduced Crowds

Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police, Police Inspector General Eko Indra Heri S., mentioned that curfew indirectly raised public awareness and concern for health protocols. People are gradually getting used to not gather outside their homes during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We have found there is a sense of concern for health protocols and obeying existing rules since the curfew was implemented," Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police said.

Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police mentioned curfew had been implemented on POM IX Street and Kambang Iwak area of Palembang from 21.00 to 03.00 Indonesia Western Time. In addition, a joint team from South Sumatra Regional Police, Palembang City Resort Police, and Municipality Police (Satpol PP) are deployed to control community activities that caused crowds and exceeded the maximum operational limits of business.

"We are implementing Palembang Perwali (Mayor Regulation) regarding operating hours," the Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police said.

He also emphasized strictly implement health protocols until they become a new habit for the community. Moreover, the number of Covid-19 cases in Palembang is very high in red zone status.

"(Sanctions and expansion of restriction points) so far are not urgent; we will adjust them by referring to the dynamics on the field," Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police added.

Meanwhile, the Director of Traffic Security of South Sumatra Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Cornelis Ferdinand Hotman Sirait, said it is rare to find crowds in public facilities or hangout places since the curfew was implemented. It means that this step is quite effective when implementing micro-based Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM Mikro).

"Usually, we often find gatherings in cafes or other places that do not apply health protocols, now they are gradually decreasing," he explained.

The Director of Traffic Security also explained that the curfew restrictions also apply to motorists who pass over a specified time. To not disrupt economic movement, some interested parties, such as online transportation, are still allowed to operate.
