Papua - KASUARI Programme (Welfare for the People) is the tool of the Noken Community Development Unit (Binmas Noken) to optimise people's welfare through the management of crops so it could be beneficial and has a high economic value. Therefore, it could help to improve Papuan natives' economy and welfare.
The programme was conducted by the Binmas Noken of Tolikara, led by Police Inspector First Class Widada and his members: Police Brigadier Petrus Hamokwarong, Police Brigadier First Class Yordan P Bonay, Police Chief Brigadier Rambo D Womsiwor, Police Brigadier First Class Pilipus Samtai, Police Brigadier Second Class Derek Letlora, and Police Brigadier Second Class Fadil. The programme was conducted on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at 09.00, in Ampera village, Karubaga district, Tolikara regency.
In its commencement, the Binmas Noken team met Mr Frans Kogoya and Mr Wemin Kogoya as the cultivators. After meeting, the Binmas Noken team introduced themselves and invited Mr Frans Kogoya and Wemin Kogoya and the farming community to optimise in cultivating vegetables and secondary dry season crops (palawija).
Efforts that could be used in improving farming cultivation are such as utilising lands and gardens through fertilising or by expanding land by opening new lands, or by planting several commodities in one planting season with an almost similar harvesting period, such as peanuts and corns.
There are also efforts on planting intermediary plants in the middle of the main plants with different harvest periods, such as planting green mustard, morning glory, or spinach between the corns or cassava.
Mr Wemin Kogoya responded to the explanation. "We thanked the arrival and care from the Binmas Task Force team, and we will support this KASUARI programme. On the cultivation efforts, we and the community and other farming groups have utilised the land and garden for farming.
Mr Wemin Kogoya also explained the seeds from the Binmas Task Force have been growing. Corns and vegetables are now able to be harvested, and some of them are sowed for the seeds for the next planting season. The farming groups are now preparing huts. The activity was ended with the handover of vegetable seeds and basic necessities packages from the Binmas Task Force team, received by Mr Wemin Kogoya.
During the visit, Mr Frans Kogoya, Mr Wemin Kogoya, and the farming group has and would utilise land optimally and sustainably. The community as the farming group understood that by utilising lands and gardens for farming, they could earn money to fulfil family needs and save some for the seeds. The farming group feels that the Binmas Task Force presence in the field is a form of care and empathy of the personnel to the people. The community is also able to become Police partners in maintaining conducive security and order situations.
