South Sumatra Regional Police, Beware of Increasing Hotspots

Tribratanews.polri.go.id - South Sumatra. Aware of the hotspots increase as the trigger of forest and land fires in recent months, South Sumatra Regional Police increases personnel preparedness in the area.

"Based on data from Lapan (space research institute) satellite monitoring, the hotspot increase is quite high starting to occur in March 2021 with 49 points, April 122 points, and May 134 points. We need to watch out he hotspot increase as it can trigger forest and land fires and cause smog disaster," the Head of Public Affairs of South Sumatra Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Supriadi explained.

He also advised the public to take various measures to anticipate forest and land fires. He said from June 2021 until the next few months, hotspots are predicted to continue to increase along with the start of less rain.

He said the increasing of hotspot needs to be watched out for, particularly for people living in 10 areas mapped that during the dry season this year, they would become prone to forest and land fire.

The mapped areas prone to forest and land fires are Palembang City, Banyuasin Regency, Musi Banyuasin, Ogan Ilir, Ogan Komering Ilir, Muara Enim, East Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), Lahat, Musirawas, and North Musirawas. Communities in areas prone to forest and land fires are advised not to burn, either to clear or open new land.

In accordance with the announcement from Chief of South Sumatera Regional Police, [police] needs to be alert of forest and land fires by preparing various equipment to extinguish fires, and other actions.

His team also has prepared personnel and equipment to help the community preventing forest and land fires. Preventive action from the South Sumatra Regional Police is a form of responsibility for carrying out tasks in dealing with forest and land fires in the province, which has about 3.5 million hectares forest area.

Head of Emergency Response Division of South Sumatra Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Ansori, said the hotspots increase in the last few months needs to be watched out for because they would cause forest and land fires. One of the hot spots in Ogan Ilir Regency caused peatland fire of two hectares on the side of Palembang-Indralaya (Palindra) Toll Road KM15, Sri Banding Village on Tuesday (06/15) night.

The land fire lasted for five hours and was successfully extinguished by joint team of BPBD Ogan Ilir, Manggala Agni, Ogan Ilir Resort Police, and the Masyarakat Peduli Dpi Desa Sri Banding [community organization concerned on land and forest fire].
