The diversity of Indonesia in ethnicity, religion, race, culture, and geographic expanse that is so vast from Aceh to Papua is a treasure, while also potentially hiding a social conflict under it. Especially when every region held a natural resource that often breeds conflict.

The National Police, also known as Polri, is responsible for the safety and security of the people while upholding the law, giving protection, shelter, and service to the community.

This is in accordance with the main tasks of the National Police as stated in the Law on the Indonesian National Police Number 2 of 2002, and also in accordance with Law Number 7 of 2012 concerning Handling of Social Conflicts.

The principles of conflict handling according to the Law on Social Conflict Handling are humanism, kinship, unbiased, and non-discrimination. These four principles are the main reference for Polri in handling social conflict in the community, meaning a persuasive approach is a preferred approach than repressive.

To suppress the potential conflict, then the important step is to intensify dialogue between the community while upholding the law without discrimination.

The purpose of handling a conflict is to create a safe, secure, peaceful, and prosperous community; maintain peace and harmony among the people, and also increase tolerance in social life.

The harmony aspect between the nation and the people is the aspect that must be paid attention to more by the National Police.

Recently there is a term of community policing popping out. This is a part of the strategy in maintaining security and safety to the people, while expected that it would create concern, sensitivity, and togetherness between Polri and the people in solving social conflict, especially in eliminating several conflict potentials.
