Indonesian National Police stated that the suggestion from a Muslim scholar, Ahmad Syafii Maarif or Buya Syafii, who asked the high-quality santri (Islamic school students) to be recruited into the education of Police Academy have been ongoing. Moreover, since 2017, Police have consistently opened recruit personnel from Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), Hafiz Quran (Quran memorisers), and other high-achiever religious students.
"Police has been recruiting new personnel, from NCO to Officers, from people with backgrounds of santri, Hafiz Quran, MTQ champions, and other religiously outstanding students since 2017 from various provinces since 2017", Chief of PR Division of National Police, Police Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo, said in his written statement on Thursday (2/12/2021).
Dedi explained that, since 2017, dozens of santri have enrolled in NCO or Officer education, consisting of 44 santri in NCO training and 47 in Officer training.
The two-star general then stated that Police also accepted recruitees of NCO of 2020/2021 from Hafiz Quran (55 people), Musabaqah Tilawatil Kutub (1 people), and Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) (9 people).
Dedi added that Police is also accepted 77 people into the recruitment of Religious Special Competency NCOs from various provinces.
"In accordance to the Chief of National Police's policy, the said recruitment pattern would be keep being conducted by National Police", he said.
Previously, Buya Syafii Maarif suggested the National Police recruit high-quality santri to join the Police Academy. His video-formatted suggestion was uploaded by a Twitter account @budhihermanto. In the video, Buya deemed the recruitment of the santri into Police could ease radicalism handling.
"I, Ahmad Syafii Maarif, an 80-year-old citizen, hoped that the Police, mainly Chief of National Police and his personnel, to recruit santri into the Police Academy", Buya said in the video on Tuesday (30/11).
The former Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Committee deemed that there is no need for many santri to enter the Police Academy, but the one with the high-quality. He deemed that this measure could ease Police in eradicating radical groups.
"There should be not too many. The aim is to assist Police to face these deviant groups, the ones who are against Pancasila and the radicals. If Police knew about religion and understood their language, it would be easier", he said.
According to him, Police must be proactively recruited santri worth to be in the Police Academy. "Police have to be proactive for this. They have to look for the one with high quality. Even though they would be officers, they still understand the Kitab Kuning, just like the one understood by these radical groups", he added.
