Following up on the instructions of the National Police Chief, Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who responded to the complaint from the Tanjung Priok Port truck driver to the President of Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. Hearing the complaint, the President of Republic of Indonesia contacted the National Police Chief by telephone. In front of the container truck drivers, the President asked the National Police Chief to take action against crimes in the Tanjung Priok Port Terminal area.
As a follow-up, the National Police Chief issued instructions to all levels of the Regional Police to conduct operations against acts of thuggery and illegal levies (extortion).
The Directorate of General Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimum) of the East Java Regional Police is moving to comb ports, terminals, to bus and truck bases to hunt down perpetrators of thuggery and illegal levies, from the sweeping carried out as many as 67 perpetrators were arrested.
The Head of Public Relations of East Java Regional Police, Pol. Grand Commissioner Repli Handoko, said the 67 perpetrators were arrested at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, Bungurasih Terminal in Sidoarjo, to a number of truck and bus bases in East Java.
To this day, we have arrested 67 people. That's a temporary number, because the operation is still being carried out with the police ranks, explained the Head of Public Relations of the East Java Regional Police, Monday (06/14/2021).
The Head of Public Relations of East Java Regional Police explained that the perpetrators harassed truck drivers in the port area and buses in the terminal area. The perpetrators demanded money forcibly, and carried out extortion by force. So the actions of these perpetrators are quite disturbing.
Of the 67 perpetrators arrested, 27 were processed with general criminal offenses, while 40 others were processed with minor criminal offenses.
General criminal offenses from Article 170 in conjunction with Article 351 of the Criminal Code, Article 368 of the Criminal Code and Article 2 of the Emergency Law Number 2 of 1951. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison.
Meanwhile, the offense is a minor crime because it is considered to have violated Article 49 in conjunction with Article 17 of the East Java Regional Regulation No. 2 of 2020 concerning amendments to the East Java Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2019 concerning the implementation of peace, order and community protection with a maximum imprisonment of 3 months and a maximum fine of IDR 50 million
