The 2021 Bhayangkara Mural Festival was opened by the Chief of National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, at the Bhayangkara courtyard of the Indonesian National Police Headquarter Complex, Trunojoyo Street, South Jakarta, on Saturday (30/10). Eighty muralists that have been passed the curation and selection from the Regional Police drew their piece to compete for the Chief of National Police Trophy.
Chief of PR Divison of National Police, Police Inspector General Argo Yuwono, which is also the committee head of the mural festival, stated that, at the beginning of the registration, there were only 18 people. However, after the Chief of National Police stated that this mural festival is allowed for positive and negative artworks, 803 people were registered.
Out of 803, by the selection process at the Regional Police, 154 people were passed. And then, 80 mural teams were finally selected to draw their art at the Bhayangkara courtyard. Argo stated that the Bhayangkara Mural Festival was also held on 34 Regional Police offices.
"The registrant then send their design to the committee, and the committee from the Regional Police would select and send the best five to Jakarta", Argo said in his opening statement.
He said that this festival is scored by the jury panel that has no Police personnel in it. The panel, according to Argo, is consisted of experts, experienced, and working in art.
"There are no Police personnel in the jury panel; they are from outside (of the Police institution). They are competent and understand the murals. We facilitate all professional juries who are scoring the murals", the former Chief of PR Agency of the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Police said.
Argo added that mural art provides freedom to the makers to explore their creativity and to fulfil a passion and aesthetic values, which are transmitted into permanent media. According to Argo, with the technological advancement into the digital era, the movement momentum that happened at the Indonesian mural community keeps providing opportunities for their activists.
Therefore, National Police deemed that muralists' creativity needed to be appreciated and published to inspire the movement spirit in addressing critics and positive messages in the mural medium.
The winners' works would even be drawn at the columns of the Transjakarta overpass in front of the Indonesian National Headquarter of Trunojoyo street, South Jakarta. Related to the exposition of the mural competition winners, the National Police claimed to have coordinated with the Jakarta Provincial Government.
"Ten winners would redraw their murals at the columns in front of National Police Headquarter. We have asked for a permit from the Jakarta Provincial Government on their five columns. The columns are high, so there would be two murals stacked on top of each other. We give space for the winners", Argo concluded.
