Tribratanews.polri.go.id – Jakarta. INP Chief Spokesperson Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo stated that the collaboration between INP and Press Council aimed at safeguarding freedom of press and enforcing laws related to the abuse of the professions.

The statement was said when he participated in the event of commemoration of National Press Day in the theme “Disseminating the Cooperation between Press Council and INP in Protecting Freedom of Press” in Medan, North Sumatra on Tuesday (2/7/23).

He highlighted the memorandum of understanding that has signed by both parties in order to provide guidelines for monitoring and reporting content, especially in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

The public literacy about election regulations is important to ensure that the public is not susceptible to hoaxes, negative campaigns, identity politics, and other manipulative tactics. “We need to ensure that the public is immune to these tactics so that they are not easily provoked or polarized,” he added.

He concluded that the spread of hoaxes in the media is a result of three emerging phenomena. First, the convergence of media, where media owners have multiple types of media, can lead to the spread of news without facts or data. Second, the rise of citizen journalism, where anyone can become a media maker, leading to the spread of unverified information. Finally, virality, where news reports quickly spread and become trending, despite the public’s lack of ability to verify the accuracy of the information.
