In carrying out their duties either preemptive, preventive, repressive and even rehabilitate, are based on or referring to the rule of law. Not only enforcing the law, but the police are also enforcing the justice. However, when there are no justice or humanity when enforcing the law, the police can ignore the law through discretion, alternative dispute or even restorative justice.
The police can choose either of those of options only under the basis of humanity, justice, the greater good, and education. The norms in the society also becomes the parameter for the police in conducting their duty. It is the same principle but the ways can vary and adapt according to the norms and culture of the society.
Therefore, it can be said that the police are building the society by enforcing the law.
The basic core of the police in conducting their duty is to be a helper. If this core is weak within the officers, the duties will be neglected, avoided, and selfish in doing their duty, also far from the truth and what is done is only for justification.
Lack of empathy will make the police only help those who in need when they were seen by their leader or beneficial for themselves. They will become a safety player and will throw away the case if it is not beneficial for themselves.
From what we have seen is that the police indeed have the core, a helper, and have a strong empathy. They have a strong empathy and care for humanity. They also have a strong volunteerism. The police do their duty to humanize the humans, to help, to become an example, to uphold the truth.
