Victims of Illegal Indonesian Immigrant Workers who were going to be sent to Malaysia were rescued by Sub-Directorate IV of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Riau Islands Police. The police also managed to arrest one suspect with the initials A (42 years old) who responsible for the departure of illegal migrant workers to Malaysia from Batam.
The disclosure of the case was carried out by Sub-Directorate IV of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Riau Islands Police on September 22, 2022. The case begun with a report from one of the victim's family to the police. "The report states that one of the victim’s family member reported that the victim will be sent to Malaysia ilegally," said Director of General Criminal Investigation of the Riau Islands Police, Commissioner Jefri Ronald Parulian Siagian, during a press conference at the Riau Islands Police Headquarters, Monday September 26th, 2022.
The Director of Criminal Investigation of the Riau Islands Police continued that they traced several port points where the illegal imigrant would be departed. "We found that the victim would be departed from Harbor Bay Harbor," he said.
When an inspection was carried out at the port location, the police also found one person suspected of being the organizers who dispatch the illegal imigrant to a neighboring country. "There are at least seven victims and these seven people are from Lampung, Palembang, and also from Madura," he said.
The Director of Criminal Investigation of Riau Islands Police continued that there are other suspects in Malaysia who provides capital to the suspect to recruit Indonesian citizens who want to work in Malaysia. "They gave at least Rp18 million to the suspect," said the Director of Criminal Investigation of Riau Islands Police.
The evidence that was secured were seven passports, one mobile phone, Rp5.6 million in cash, one unit of Toyota Calya car and seven boarding pass tickets. For his actions, the suspect was charged with Article 81 in conjunction with Article 83 of Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, with a maximum threat of 10 years and a maximum fine of Rp. 15 billion.
