Tribratanews.polri.go.id - The South Kalimantan Police have confirmed that there will be no more illegal coal mining activities in the Meratus Mountains, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, after the police have intensively investigated the area which is said to be suspected of illegal mining.

Head Sub Directorate IV of Certain Crimes Investigation of the South Kalimantan Police, AKBP Ifan Hariyat said, "Our team has been conducting searches there since September 2022 and until now there has been no mining activity", reported by medcom Friday (12/16).

AKBP Ifan revealed that during the investigation, a mining pit was found in the Nateh Village area, Batang Alai Selatan District, HST Regency. The distance of the excavation hole is approximately one kilometer after passing through an earthen embankment which closes road access for bikes.

The access road to the location of the pit is located next to the coal storage area, but is closed by an earthen embankment so that it can only be accessed on foot. The mine pit is believed to be an illegal mining excavation because when the coordinate points are matched with official data, the location is outside the official mining business permit. Even that point is believed to be included in the forest area.

Even though there were dug holes and remnants of piles of coal, the officers did not find any mining equipment, witnesses or suspected perpetrators at that location.

"We also continue to coordinate with the local police to check regularly, and report immediately if there is illegal mining," he said.

For information, coal mining without a permit violates the criminal provisions in Article 158 of Law Number 3/2020 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.
