The Australian government urged tens of thousands of residents in Sydney to evacuate due to flooding in the region, Monday (4/7).
According to State Emergency Services official, Ashley Sullivan, about 32,000 people in the state of New South Wales were asked to evacuate.
"We are seeing some rivers overflowing rapidly, faster than expected," Sullivan told Australian media ABC.
Australia has been dealing with heavy rains in recent days. The weather caused flooding in several areas of the country.
In fact, the rescue team claimed to have rescued about 20 people over the last 12 hours due to flooding. Some of them were trapped in the car.
On Monday (4/7) morning, the overflowing river even turned a plain in Camden, Sydney, into a lake. Streets in the city were submerged in water, while houses there were flooded with knee-deep water.
Not only that, water has also overflowed from the Warragamba Dam since Sunday (3/7) due to excessive water levels. The dam is a source of drinking water for most people in the city.
As reported by AFP, the heavy rain is one of the impacts of climate change that is now hitting the world, including Australia.
As the Earth's temperature increases, the atmosphere stores more water to the clouds, which in turn has the potential to cause heavy rain.
Not only dealing with flooding problems, Australia also has to deal with forest fires and coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef due to climate change.
