Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, asked that no one should dictate the others when they are in a partnership. This was conveyed by Jokowi in a speech at the opening of the ASEAN-European Union (EU) 45th Anniversary Summit in Brussels, Belgium.
In his speech, President Jokowi emphasized the partnership between ASEAN and the European Union which must be based on the principle of equality. Jokowi himself is one of six state leaders who were asked to convey their views at the opening ceremony of the ASEAN-EU Summit.
"If we want to build a good partnership, then the partnership must be based on equality, there can be no coercion. There can no longer be parties who always dictate and think that ‘my standard is better than yours’," said the President in a written statement from the Press Bureau, Media and Information Secretariat of the President, Wednesday (14/12/22).
President Jokowi revealed that Southeast Asia, or ASEAN, for decades has been an economic powerhouse, which is also became a center of growth. The partnership with ASEAN will certainly be profitable. This statement is based on the results of a survey on business perceptions in ASEAN, issued by the ASEAN-EU Business Council in September 2022.
From the results of the survey, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta encourages an equal and mutually beneficial partnership between ASEAN and the EU. From the current multidimensional pandemic and crisis, an important lesson must be learned that growing and prospering together is the only option.
