Albuquerque Police, has detained a man who is believed to be the main suspect in the murder of four Muslim men in recent times, Tuesday (9/8).
"We are tracking the whereabouts of those we believed to be involved in the recent murder of a Muslim man in Albuquerque," Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said on Twitter.
"A driver was arrested and he became our main suspect for this series of murders. We will explain in more detail this Tuesday afternoon," he added.
The killings of the four Muslim men took place between November 2021 and August this year. Three of the murders occurred in the last two weeks. The four Muslim men are all of South Asian descent.
The first three victims were Muhammad Afzaal Hussain (27), Aftab Hussein (41), and Mohammad Ahmadi (62). Police said the three men were "ambushed without warning, shot and killed."
The fourth victim, 25-year-old Naeem Hussain, was found dead hours after Friday prayers and the funerals of Hussein and Ahmadi last week. While police have yet to definitively say the four murders are connected, authorities are still trying to figure out a motive for their murder.
To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the killing of these four Muslim men. Police have also not released an explanation about the identity of the suspect in this murder. Authorities have also not been able to conclude whether the four killings were carried out by one person or more.
However, police said they were investigating and looking for "a vehicle" that might be linked to the murder. The vehicle is a dark silver sedan which police say may be a Volkswagen Jetta. But it is still unclear who the car belongs to, or where it is in the photos released by the police. Police said the vehicle was "suspected to be used as a conveyance in the murder of the four Muslim men".
"Everyone believes that the vehicle was critical to what happened in at least two of the shootings," Mayor Timothy Keller told CNN Monday.
