Europe Countries Accused Russians for the Nord Stream Pipe Leakage

Tribratanews.polri.go.id -   The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in Danish waters leaked with bubbles spreading from 200 to 1,000 meters in diameter. An explosion was detected before the pipeline, linking Russia with European countries, leaked.

"The largest leak was to spread a bubble one kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter. The smallest was to create a circle about 200 meters (656 feet) in diameter," the military wrote in a statement with photos of the leak. 27/09/2022).

The explosions, that was recorded before mysterious leaks in two Baltic Sea gas pipelines linking Russia and Europe, raise suspicions of sabotage amid tensions in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

This photo taken by the Danish military shows bubbles on the surface of the water coming from three leaks in Swedish and Danish waters north of Poland.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he did not know more details about the incident. However, he assessed that the gas pipe leak was due to acts of sabotage.

"We see clearly that it was an act of sabotage, which might mark the next step in the escalation of the situation in Ukraine," he said.

Meanwhile Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it was "hard to imagine that it wasn't intentional".

Sweden's National Seismic Network recorded two "massive energy releases" shortly before a gas leak near their location off the coast of the Danish island of Bornholm, Uppsala University seismologist Peter Schmidt told AFP.

"With this massive release of energy, nothing but an explosion can cause them. You can see that they are quite sudden. This is a very sudden release of energy. It's not a slow collapse of something," he explained.

Russia previously said it was "deeply concerned" about the leak. Asked by reporters if it could be an act of sabotage, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it was currently "impossible to exclude any option".

While Ukraine pointed the finger directly at Moscow, saying it was "nothing more than a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression against the European Union".

A White House official said the United States would not speculate on the cause but stood ready to support European efforts to investigate the leak.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines have been at the center of geopolitical tensions in recent months as Russia cut gas supplies to Europe in retaliation for Western sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile the pipeline - operated by a consortium majority owned by Russian gas giant Gazprom - is currently not operating. However, both still contain gas.

One leak in Nord Stream 1 occurred in the Danish economic zone and the other in the Swedish economic zone, while the Nord Stream 2 leak occurred in the Danish economic zone. The leak was first reported on Nord Stream 2 on Monday (26/09/2022).
